I found one EXACTLY like it. This is it. This one is in Texas, but it turns out there's another one in the same color with the same package in San Jose, CA. I messaged the owners of both of these cars.
So this was his last car. Same color (Bluewater Metallic, as it turns out). Same wheels. Same sport package. I need this in my life again. I would happily give up my 300ZX for it.
Huge update: I got a message back from the owner of the one in Ca. It's In New York at the moment, but is getting shipped back to CA later this year or early next and is getting sold!
Edit again: it also is a manual and has under 70k miles.

Got me feeling all nostalgic! My mom had an electric red 540i Touring with the sport package and style 32s. That's the car I grew up with and the reason I love wagons so much. I would love to track that car down one day in the not-too-distant future.

If you could look into his older insurance records you could look up the vin of his then using CarFax find where his is now and own his exact car.

I remember coming into our garage and seeing the car for the first time. Feeling that sharp crease along the door, marveling at how low it was, thinking the interior was so beautiful. I remember looking at the sharp cut in the tail gate and being in so much wonder at the window AND THE WHOLE THING OPENING, NOT JUST THE TAILGATE AS ONE. I remember finding out that you could press and hold the unlock button to roll down all the windows. I remember being in marvel at this whole car, the nicest car my family had ever owned.
Fuck I miss it. I miss my dad being so in love with it too.
